More reading suggestions

Hi, Some ideas for future discussions:

It's probably worth putting down the PM's Prize Winner: Eva Hornung for her novel Dog Boy on our list of suggested reads for next year.

Also Booker Prize winner: Howard Jacobson, The Finkler Question 'a novel about love, loss and male friendship, and explores what it means to be Jewish today. Said to have ‘some of the wittiest, most poignant and sharply intelligent comic prose in the English language', The Finkler Question has been described as ‘wonderful' and ‘richly satisfying' and as a novel of ‘full of wit, warmth, intelligence, human feeling and understanding'.'

Well done Kate ... we do need to decide at our next meeting.

I've read Dog Boy and think it's well worth reading. We read an earlier book by her (CIty of sealions) and liked it as I recollect.

Could I suggest Alan Gould's book "The Lake Woman"? It was shortlisted for the PM's prize and he's a Canberran. I should confess to some bias though as he's a personal friend. Should call him to commiserate for evidently not having won the PM's prize this time.

Of course you can! Is he a poet? What is the book about? Just come prepared to our next meeting to argue the case and see what happens!

2 more suggestions:
Lloyd Jones (author of Mr Pip) whose book Hand Me Down World was recently reviewed in ANZ LitlOvers Blog : http://wp.me/phTIP-293
Albert Camus, L'Etranger or The Plague (2010 is the 50th anniversary of his death)

Nice ones Kate, thanks.

Jonathan Franzen's Freedom is a possibility too. It's been getting a lot of attention and mixed reviews.

Also, what about our long book over summer, as we traditionally do. A classic? Which one? The Virginia Woolf on our list? Last year we did Wolf Hall but we often choose a classic.

Sorry Kate, you had The Finkler question here and I didn't put it in the Suggestion list for last night. I got sidetracked by Dog Boy!

The book I mentioned last night, 'Maralinga', but couldn't remember the author was written by Judy Nunn. This book has been passed to me but I haven't read it yet. There was a call for an Australian female author, however, a quick random sampling suggests to me that it's not particularly literary, might be more of a 'blockbuster' actually. 'A story of love and heartbreak.' Hmmm.....

Thanks Janet. Yes, she's one of those more airport book writers I think. I've given her to my sister-in-law's family a couple of times and they've loved them, but as you suspect I think she's more for holiday reading than discussion.
